Can I bring my phone to class (PROF answers)?

Can I be on my phone during my college classes?

In most college classes, professors will allow students to quietly and periodically check their phones as long as it is not a distraction, however some professors and colleges have very strict electronic device policies and they may not allow the use of phones in their classroom.

What are your institution’s policies on cell phones?

If you want to know if you can use your phone in a college class, you should check your university’s student catalog to see if they have their policies outlined. It is likely that this policy is very vague and only suggests that it is a violation if you are disruptive or using your phone to commit a crime.

What is your professor’s policy on cell phones?

You want to make sure you check your professor’s syllabus for their policy regarding cell phones because it should be noted there too. This is this most important thing to remember because while the college may allow them, your professor may not.

Finally, if you still don’t find any mention of their policies, check the student code of conduct, if your college has one.

If you have confirmed that they are not prohibited in class, you should be okay to have it out and check it a few times during class.

Most professors know that students have personal lives and there could be some emergency at home you need to take care of.

As a former professor, I recommend that students talk with their professor first and ask them if they are okay with you checking your phone occasionally, for personal reasons, but let them know it isn’t going to be a distraction for you.

It will be nice to talk with your professor and give them a heads up that you will glance at your phone occasionally, but that you won’t let it interfere with your attention to their lecture.

Do not forget that if you are taking an exam or completing an assignment, the professor may require you to turn your device completely off and that is an acceptable request.

Professors can have different policies for their classroom and the university gives them broad discretion on how they deal with phones in their classrooms. It is not a one size fits all policy.

I always talked to my students on the first class day about my policies, and this included cell phones, so you want to make sure you attend class on the first day to learn about your professor’s expectations.

I find that a typical lecture style class will allow phone use more than a laboratory because of the safety guidelines that students and instructors must follow in a lab.

Honestly, some professors actually like students to use their phones during class but as long as it pertains to your class and not just for fun.

Can professors take away your phone?

As a former professor, I am not aware of any policy that allows professors to physically take away student’s phones for any reason. However, if you have violated a law, then it is possible that college law enforcement officers could seize your phone, but this is highly unlikely.

However, these policies can vary based on the country where your university is located. I am mostly referring to the United States and public colleges.

If your professor takes away your phone and you attend a public university in the United States, you could always go to the Dean of Students Office (or equivalent office) to find out if the professors are allowed to temporarily take away students’ cell phones.

I find this to be a very unlikely scenario because this puts a lot of liability on the professor and the college.

  • What if something happened and you had an emergency?

  • What if the professor damaged your phone by dropping it?

  • What if they viewed any notifications that appeared on your home screen and invaded your privacy?

For these reasons, I cannot see any public colleges giving the professor the freedom to take away phones from students. If a professor is doing this, visit the appropriate office to find out if this is allowed at their institution.

As a professor, we were never authorized to take students’ property from them.

When I was in college myself, a professor asked us to place our belongings/backpacks at the front of the classroom during tests. But even this practice is concerning because what if another student grabs the wrong backpack accidentally or purposefully.

It is too much liability on the college, and even if a professor has a policy where they take students’ phones, the college is probably NOT AWARE of this happening in the first place.

In some instances, students might have dedicated lockers where they can place their belongings which takes away some of the concerns I brought up earlier. But to have a professor personally handling your phone seems more questionable to me.

Instead of taking a student’s cell phone, as professors, we were asked to report the violation to the college and they would investigate further. We didn’t take it upon ourselves to enforce the electronic devices policy and confiscate personal items.

However, professors can ask students to leave a class if they are violating the professor’s policies and this would include any disruption due to the use of electronic devices.

Is it OKAY to bring your phone to class?

Yes, it is okay to bring your phone to your college class because you could have an emergency that arises and someone needs to contact you or you don’t want to leave your personal belongings in your car because they could get stolen. But before you have it out, you need to remember these important factors first.

Even though you can bring it to class, it doesn’t mean that you can be on your phone during class. Some professors may have very strict guidelines regarding use during their class time.

Make sure you check their syllabus and ask them their policy first.

And even if they allow phones to be out during regular class time, they might require them to be turned off and put away during exams or in class assignments.

Also, the university may have their own policies and they may not allow use on campus. It all depends on the university, but in my professional experience as a professor, it is very common for students to have them out during class without any issues.

Do college professors care if you use your phone during class?

College professors do CARE if you use your phone during class because they don’t want it to become a disruption and you might miss important lecture material. However, occasional use or use for note-taking is likely acceptable in most professors’ classes.

When I was a professor, I never cared if students used their phone quietly and without distracting them from the lecture.

If students are going to have it out on their desk, I didn’t mind. If students were quickly responding to a text or stepped out in the hall to take an important phone call, I didn’t care either.

I cared when students would be using social media or doing other coursework during my class. That will look disrespectful and it likely disrupts your professor and other students.

If you have to use it during class, make it quick and don’t be a distraction.

When I was teaching, I would see a lot of students taking pictures of the PowerPoints for their personal notes and that is likely okay too.

There are lots of legitimate uses for phones during class, you just want to make sure that you aren’t violating your professor’s policies.

Do colleges search your phone?

No, colleges do not routinely search students’ cell phones and they don’t have authority to do so unless the student has violated a criminal law or a university policy. This may be a lawful search by law enforcement or an administrative search by college staff.

College students are protected by the Fourth Amendment, but this only protects students from unreasonable searches and seizures from government authority. But don’t worry, you still have protections afforded to you.

If the college reasonably suspects that you violated a university policy, this could open you up to a search of your phone. But in the vast majority of cases, the college would probably involve law enforcement to get a warrant first.

Even though the best route is to get a warrant, the issue might not be about a criminal law violation but rather an institutional policy violation at the university.

Let’s say that a student is suspected of hazing on campus, and they reasonably believe that the student used their phone to communicate messages to another student that proves that they were hazing someone. The college could complete an administrative search of the student’s phone.

Keep in mind that if you give consent for the college to search your phone, then it’s very likely that they can and will do just that. And you won’t have the same protections afforded to you if you voluntarily consent.

But there are lots of circumstances that can change the outcome here, and a lot of court rulings that are constantly challenging these types of searches. There are too many variables to say for sure.

One thing I know for sure is that it is highly unlikely, in the United States, for you to have your phone searched by college staff unless you gave consent.

I am not a law expert so please consult with the appropriate professional if you have more questions about the constitutionality of a search.

What are college policies for cell phones in class?

College policies for cell phone use during class vary based on the institution and are typically dictated by the college professor rather than the institution itself.

When I was a professor, the college always let us determine our policies individually. We got to lay out how much or how little we wanted students to use their phones during class.

But as technology advances, more students may use technological devices to take notes during class and most professors won’t say anything about it.

Just know that if it becomes a disruption, then they might prohibit its use.

I found that professors would have a strict policy in their syllabus but they were more relaxed about it during class. This is because professors don’t want to seem like they don’t care if you use phones during class and they wanted to have authority to control its use later, if needed.

But again, it is highly individualized based on the professor so check their policy and talk with them personally about it.

Can a professor tell you that you can’t use your phone?

Yes, a professor can tell you that you cannot use your phone during their class because they may have a strict cell phone use policy. It is up to the professor on how they want to prohibit electronic devices during their class.

If you need to use your phone, you should step outside. In most instances, professors cannot tell you that you cannot leave the classroom.

Some students might also have accommodations to use their phone during class but the professor should be aware of these accommodations first.

It is best that you respect your professor’s policies and as long as it reasonable, it is best to abide by the rules without being disrespectful.

Can a professor tell you to put your phone away?

Absolutely a college professor can tell a student to put their phone away because professors have a lot of discretion regarding their cell phone use policies. It is common for professors to have students put their phones away, especially if they are taking an exam during class.

Professors can really have whatever policy they want as long as it doesn’t violate a university policy.

As a former professor, I find that most universities let the professors decide how they want to deal with phone use during their class.

If the professor wants you to put your phone away, it’s probably for a good reason.

What can I do if my professor tries to take my phone?

If you are at a public university in the United States and a professor tries to take away your phone, you should remain calm and politely ask them what authority they have to take your personal items. The student could simply choose to exit the classroom and leave lecture early with their belongings to avoid their professor from taking their phone.

In most situations, you shouldn’t have to surrender your items to anyone in a college setting unless you are under criminal investigation or under investigation for committing a violation against the student code of conduct.

If a professor is trying to take something from you, you could simply remove yourself from their classroom because they cannot physically keep you in the classroom unless you are being detained by law enforcement.

But remember, remain calm and try to handle the situation with respect. I would not be confrontational because you don’t want to escalate the situation.

After you leave, I would go to your college’s student office and try to make sense of everything. They can probably help you understand what their institutional policies are and how to continue your education at their college.

Again, I am not a law expert so I recommend that you speak with professionals to find out how you should handle these situations because circumstances may vary.
